Book Club Discussion: Build A Man

Please take a look at the discussion questions below and Nancy's responses, then comment with your own responses to some or all of the questions. Also, please include the number of the question(s) with your response(s) so we can all keep track of what is being discussed. Feel free to add any other comments you have that are not prompted by the questions. Thank you for reading Build A Man by Talli Roland and participating in our discussion!

1. Who is your favorite character in Build A Man and why?
I really like Serenity. She’s a great heroine because she’s upbeat and very likable. It’s fun to follow along as she goes after what she wants, and then learns valuable lessons along the way. Her choices aren’t always best, but she eventually does the right thing. Serenity is a realistic character who has flaws and wonderful qualities, too.

2. Would you be able to go undercover like Serenity did to pursue your dream job?
I would definitely want to pursue my dream job, and I may think about going undercover, but I wouldn’t go through with it. If it means compromising my morals and doing something I know is wrong or something that could harm someone, I definitely wouldn’t be able to do it.

3. What is the best aspect of Build A Man? Should anything have been improved?
The plot is great and really unique. This novel has great flow too, and it is definitely a page-turner. I didn't like the character Peter at all, but he wasn't supposed to be likable. So, I really don't have any complaints.

4. What do you think of Talli Roland’s writing style?
Talli writes with wit and charm, and every page is engaging. Her characters are very well developed, which makes for a vibrant, compelling novel.

5. Did you like the ending? Why or why not?
Yes, I did, even though I figured it would wind up that way. But I was still pleased. I also liked that it was open-ended, which paves the way for the sequel.

6. Would you recommend this novel? Why or why not?
Of course! Talli is a wonderful writer, and this book in particular really captured my interest. I think chick lit fans everywhere would enjoy it.

7. Will you read more books by Talli Roland in the future?
Definitely! I’m looking forward to reading the Build A Man sequel Construct A Couple. It will be fun to see what these characters are up to next!

  2. Trying again - blogger just deleted my whole try to comment :(. I read Build a man in Jannuary already, but still wanted to comment on the book club here.

    1. Who is your favorite character in Build A Man and why?
Serenity! And I loved seeing her and Jeremys relationship develope.

    2. Would you be able to go undercover like Serenity did to pursue your dream job?
My dream job is so very different from Serenitys, so I thing I´d do a lot, but I wouldn´t go undercover, because I´d be too scared to be discovered ;)

    3. What is the best aspect of Build A Man? Should anything have been improved?
I loved the fact, that Talli Roland writes about something I haven´t read a book about before - Botox. I have no intentions on getting cosmetic surgery and all of it doesn´t really interest me, but I was surprised that I found it really fascinating to read about it so much. So that, next to the wonderful, fun, lovely plot ist the best aspect for me.

    4. What do you think of Talli Roland’s writing style?
I really like her writing style. It was a fast read and very entertaining.

    5. Did you like the ending? Why or why not?
Yes, I liked the ending, becuse I´m a happy-ending-person and it open enough still to let your own mind wander, or start reading a sequel.

    6. Would you recommend this novel? Why or why not?
Totally. It´s a fun read, with lots of love, laughter and life in it.

    7. Will you read more books by Talli Roland in the future?
Yes definitly. I have Watching Willow Watts and The Hating Game on my kindle waiting to be read, and I´m very much looking forward to Construct A Couples release!

  3. Better late than never, I just finished this last night!

    1. Serenity was a hoot! I didn't quite understand her obsession with the tabloids, but I could certainly relate to her struggle for job fulfillment.
    2. Well, I sort of already am undercover perusing my dream job as a writer. Not I the same sense as Serenity, but I use a pen name, which is kind of like going undercover.
    3. I think the best aspect was getting the insight into cosmetic surgery. I haven't read about that before, so it was refreshing and a little eye opening!
    4. I loved Talli's voice. It reminded me of Chick Lit back in the day when the heroines were snarky and always goofing up. Fun!
    5. I did like the ending. Yes, it was predictable, but that's also why I liked it. I wanted them to get together!
    6. I would definitely recommend this novel to Chick Lit fans. Super funny & cute!
    7. Oh, indeed. I also have The Hating Game on my Kindle already and I will just have to find out what happens to Jeremy & Serenity in the sequel!
